Quick Troubleshooting Guide for PP Thermoforming Machines



Anyone who operatesfully automatic cup lid machines know that regardless of how regularly equipment is maintained, faults are inevitable.


Equipment failures are something we all wish to avoid, as they not only require significant investment of resources, manpower and finances for repairs, but also disrupt production schedules. In severe cases, they can directly prevent production targets from being met.


So, what should you do when a fault occurs? This guide will help you analyze and handle common faults in PP thermoforming machines.


1: Identifying the Cause


The first step is to analyze the root cause of the malfunction to facilitate effective repairs.


1.1 Human Error

This refers to failures caused by operator mistakes, such as improper handling, incorrect operation, or exceeding the machine's operating parameters.


1.2 Natural Wear and Tear

All components deteriorate over time with prolonged use. Eventually, worn-out parts will fail and need replacement.


1.3 Component Failures

This can include flaws in assembly, design, or the manufacturing of the components themselves, which cause misalignment or breakdown, leading to operational failure.

2.1 Addressing Human Error

After resolving the immediate fault, reinforce operator training on correct procedures to prevent future recurrence.


2.2 Wear and Tear

As wear and ageing are irreversible natural processes, such failures are difficult to prevent entirely. However, regular maintenance—such as periodic lubrication of crankshafts—can extend equipment lifespan.

Require equipment manufacturers to refine structural design and engineering principles.


3: Analyzing and Resolving Common Product Defects


During actual production with PP thermoforming machines, finished goods may exhibit various defects affecting quality and marketability. Below are common issues encountered with fully automatic thermoforming machines:


3.1 Flow Lines: Due to variations in material properties and processing techniques, flow lines may appear on the surface of finished products, particularly affecting the appearance of transparent items. Generally, thicker products exhibit more pronounced rippling. Among different materials, PVC is more prone to developing flow lines.


3.2. Contamination: These occur when minute airborne impurities settle on the heating plate during thermoforming.


3.3. Scratches: Friction between the product's outer surface and PP plastic lids making machine components during production can create surface scratches. Minimizing mechanical friction and maintaining component finish quality are crucial.


3.4. Webbing or Flash: Products may exhibit linear protrusions if the mould lacks raised features. Resolving this requires mould modification, as threaded products are unsuitable for packaging.


3.5. Air bubbles: Products may contain air pockets if plastic material incorporates trapped air during heating.
