How the Seven Components of a Thermoforming Machine Work Together




A thermoforming machine completes the manufacturing process through the coordinated operation of seven key components.


1. Clamping Device

The clamping device secures plastic sheets in place during molding. Standard plastic thermoforming machines feature adjustable clamping devices to accommodate sheets of various sizes, while some models integrate a complete clamping frame assembly.


Clamping device can be divided into two categories: one is the frame type, the other is divided into flap type. The frame-type clamping device consists of two frames, one above and one below. The sheet is clamped between the two frames. When the frame is opened, the lower frame generally remains fixed. The lower part of the upper frame of various types of thermoforming machines is fixed directly on the moulding chamber. On manual and semi-automatic thermoforming machines, where blanks are loaded and finished products are taken out by hand, when the size of the frame is very large, a safety operation device is installed within the opening range of the frame. 2. Heating System

The duration and quality of electric heating depends on the structure of the heater, the thermal inertia of the temperature transfer after the radiation surface, the distance between the sheet and the heater, the absorption coefficient of radiant energy, the characteristics of the surface of the heater as well as the thermophysical properties of the material. Commonly used heaters are electric heaters, crystal radiators and infrared heaters.


3. Vacuum System 

vacuum system consists of vacuum pumps, gas storage tanks, valves, pipelines and vacuum gauges. The gas storage tank is usually a cylindrical box welded with thin steel plate with an oval bottom. The capacity of the gas storage tank should be at least half the capacity of the largest moulding chamber. Vacuum piping, must be equipped with appropriate valves to control the capacity.


The rotating power of the vacuum pump is determined by the size of the moulding equipment and the moulding speed. The size of the vacuum central system depends on the specific production and development requirements of the factory.


4. Pneumatic System

Pneumatic system can be formed by the 3 stations thermoforming machine itself with a compressor, storage tanks, shop mains set, valves and other components.

5. Cooling Device

6. Demoulding Device

7. Control System

Thermoforming machine control system generally includes the vacuum forming, finishing and other processes, including instruments, meters, pipelines, valves and control of various parameters and actions. Control methods are manual, electrical - mechanical automatic control, computer control, etc., the specific selection should be based on the initial investment in labour costs, technical requirements, raw material costs, production and maintenance of equipment costs and other factors to be considered.
